With 2013 well under way, I am looking forward to getting stuck into my training. Over Christmas and New I have been struck down with the Norovirus and have been struggling with it for the past 4-5 weeks.
It has stopped me doing what I have wanted and needed to do, up to a point, but I have tried to push forward and get the training done when my body and health have allowed. In this downtime I have read some very interesting and inspiration books about Craig Alexander, Triathlon, Brad Wiggins and the Tour de France, so come into 2013 invigorated through my reading. I have also been looking at getting a triathlon specific bike for the 2013-14 season which has been interesting research.
Before Christmas I linked up with Nick Kinsey who is mentoring me. Nick suggested that in early 2013 I try a Half Marathon, in order to get a taste for longer distances and to get the mileage under my belt early in the pre-season. Without much of a thought I put my name down and pad my money. Since then I have been focusing on increasing my running distances, as well as getting in the pool, on the turbo trainer and personal training sessions.
So far so good on the running front with me getting some good 4-6 mile running sessions into my program across the holidays. I know this is a log way off from 13.1miles, ‘but little acorns make big oak trees’ and it is a focused 12 week program ahead of the half marathon. I am strangely looking forward to it, as it will be held in the Forest of Dean, pretty much all off-road and apparently all finishers get a decent looking medal for finishing, so what more motivation does a magpie like me need, other than a shiny gong around my neck?
Nick suggested that I progressively increase the mileage across the months with two regular run sessions to compliment my other training loads, so the plan is already in place.
I have already committed to the half marathon, 2 sprint triathlon and a bike training break in Majorca in 2013, with the hope that these events will give me goals and focus and also aid my ambitions for 2013.

I really want to sign up for a HIM event, if at all possible in 2013. I think the pre season run and early events will indicate if I am up to that challenge and also can keep losing the weight and getting into the shape I need to prepare and compete to my best potential.
I am fortunate to be mentored and supported by some patient and fantastic people. I will also be fortunate enough to have sponsorship in 2013 which will enable me to train, compete and progress using the best tools and gear – this really is greatly appreciated and incredibly useful.
I will work hard and I hope make my supporters proud and pleased with what I can achieve in 2013. A truly exciting prospect!
Now….back to business, let’s get back to 100% good health and train with vigour and focus on the fitness and weight loss!
