The end of 2013 and the start of a new year

So, here we are, almost at the end of this year and a fresh, brand new year (2014) soon upon us.

I have had a great and healthy Christmas in comparison to last year. some good health, no bugs or colds, decent food and drink, but not too much of either, too frequently. I have continued with the training through Training Peaks and seen the Xmas holiday as a good excuse to hit the pool, the turbo and treadmill as well as getting outside as often as I can. I am doing more, so I am pleased with this.

I also took the decision to ‘de-hire’ my personal trainer as I have different goals today and tomorrow than I had two years ago. I am no longer lacking motivation or need the ‘push’ to hit my training objectives. I will still be using the gym for strength work, but have a good inclining of what I need to do to achieve my Half Ironman goals for 2014. If my motivation wains I will get another Personal Trainer, but at the moment using Training Peaks on a daily basis to cover my nutrition, strength, personal goals and progress  as well as linking regularly with my tri coach is actually more inspiring and motivating than I could have imagined. I think for the moment and foreseeable future, this IS the way forward for me!

I have a firm plan of 2014 events, coupled with my ATP (annual training plan) accounting for my main races, holidays and times away, so this is in place already and everything structured around these dates. The training structure is now focusing on endurance, speed and strength and will follow a periodised fashion into 2014.

For Christmas I got a new turbo trainer (An Elite Muin), so have been using this extensively with the TT and Road bike, mostly watching the Xmas films as the weather has been pretty mean in the UK over the holidays. I am doing everything I can to remain strong, fit and healthy, with one eye firmly on the 15th June 2014 for the Cotswold 113 event.

So that’s it, the end of 2013! A couple of life ups and downs, the loss of my favourite dog, some race nightmares and quite a few giggles along the way. In the whole scheme of life, a pretty good year with inevitable endings, as is the way with life.

For 2014, we have new toys and shiny things to use. More weight has been shed and will continue to be shed in pursuit of my goals and I dream and hope of hitting my goals and aims next year…….which is literally only about 30hrs away now.

Have a happy new year and all the best for 2014 !  🙂
